The Wigram Family History and Coat of Arms


ARMS. Argent on a pale gules three escallops or; over all a chevron engrailed counterchanged on the chief waves of the sea, thereon a ship representing an English vessel of war of the 16th century, with four masts, sails furled proper, colours flying gules.
SHIELD. Marked with a white label and three pendants to show that it is borne by the eldest son of the Baron during the latter’s lifetime.
CREST. On a mount vert supported on the helm, a hand in armour in fesse couped at the wrist proper, charged with an escallop and holding a fleur-de-lys erect or.
HELM (helmet) is that of an Esquire & Gentleman.

Clive Wigram, 5 Jul 1873 - 3 Sep 1960.
Born in India. Educated Winchester College & RMA Woolwich, Commissioned into RA 1893 and 18th Lancers IA 1897, ADC to Viceroy India, served in Boer War 1900, Colonel 19th King George’s Own Lancers.

Naval Surgeon with East India Company visiting India & China. Official Drug Merchant. International trader, owned Reid & Co Brewery, Shipbuilder, Ship owner with fleet of 55 ships, Cable & Rope manufacturer, Owner East India, & Blackwall Shipyards, MP for Fowey (1802-06) & Wexford (1806-07).
Founder & Lt Col of 6th Loyal London Volunteers. Ruler in Company of Watermen & Lightermen. Lived Walthamstow House, Essex

Married 1. Catherine Brodhurst 19 Dec 1772 and had 4 sons & 2 daughters. Died 1786.
